This
handmade, painted drum was one of many gifts that were presented to potlatch participants during the four day celebration.

A
potlatch is a Pacific Northwest traditional ceremony that commemorates and
publicly validates events in Native communities. This potlatch, in memory of Albert
Bolton, was
held in Metlakatla, Alaska during September of 1994. It was organized by
his grandson,
David Boxley, a well-knownTsimshian artist and totem-pole carver. The four-day
event
involved the entire island community in a celebration of tradition and heritage.
